The Language of Flowers - The Meaning of Giving Flowers
The ritual of giving flowers dates back to prehistoric times. It is can be seen in Ancient Egyptian inscriptions as well as in Greek and Roman mythology. In fact, the word floral has its origins in the Roman Goddess Flora, the goddess of flowers.
The public tradition of giving flowers progressed and grew dramatically during the middle ages, when courtship was a harsh process, usually involving entire families and plenty of supervised visits. It was primarily during this time, that being able to speak through flowers became so important-giving couples the ability to express emotions to each other without ever worrying about being seen or heard-and through this practice that the idea of a ‘language of flowers’ was born.
